Common questions

What is a discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation?+

A DCF estimates what a company or stock is worth today based on the cash it is expected to generate in the future. Because money in the future is worth less than money now, each year's projected cash flow is discounted back to a present value using a chosen rate, and the results are summed to give an intrinsic value. Comparing that intrinsic value to the current market price suggests whether the stock looks cheap or expensive on your assumptions.

What is the discount rate, and how do I choose it?+

The discount rate reflects the return you require to compensate for the risk and the time value of money; a higher rate means future cash flows are worth less today. Investors often base it on the expected return for equities of similar risk. Small changes in this rate can swing the valuation substantially, which is one reason DCF outputs should be treated as a range rather than a precise number.

Why is a DCF so sensitive to its assumptions?+

A DCF depends on forecasts of future growth, profit margins, and the discount rate - none of which are known with certainty, and all of which compound over many years. A slightly more optimistic growth assumption or a slightly lower discount rate can produce a much higher value. This sensitivity is not a flaw so much as a reminder to test a range of scenarios and treat the single headline figure with caution.

Is this a recommendation to buy or sell?+

No. This is an educational tool that computes an intrinsic value from the assumptions you enter; it is only as reliable as those inputs. Real investing decisions require far more analysis and an understanding of the specific company and market. Use it to explore how valuation responds to different assumptions, not as investment advice, and consult a licensed professional for decisions.
